  1. 1.The 10-Seed Paper Towel Method

Every winter, gardeners sort through paper envelopes stamped with dates from several seasons past. While parsnip and onion seeds lose viability within a year, tomato, brassica, and cucumber seeds can readily sprout even after five years in cool storage.

The 10-Seed Paper Towel Method

Dampen a sheet of paper towel, arrange exactly 10 seeds along one half, fold it over, and slide it into a labeled zip-top bag. Keep it in a warm cabinet (70°F / 21°C). Check on day 7: if 8 seeds sprout, you have an 80% germination rate and can sow normally!
